Ankle and Foot Trauma

When hiking in the summer, stepping off the porch, or walking over ice, a wrong step can unfortunately, quickly turn into a broken ankle or foot. Trauma like this to the bones, tendons and ligaments can result in pain and inflammation as well as difficulty walking and an inability to bear weight on the foot.

With 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments the ankle and foot are highly complex. Many different types of breaks can occur. You want a surgeon with trauma experience. Chad D. Brady, DPM, FACFAS specializes in trauma surgery for the feet and ankles.

Dr. Brady will explain the injury, how he’ll fix the injury and what you need to do to promote healing. His goal is to stabilize the ankle while minimizing soft tissue damage and providing mobility to the patient. Care following surgery is an important part of your recovery.  Often, your foot must remain elevated after surgery.  For the first two weeks after surgery, you might only be permitted to weight bear on the operated foot/ankle for transfers only. Once stitches are removed, motion exercises strengthen the ankle. Dr. Brady will let you know when full weight bearing and driving is allowed. CT scans and x-rays can show how the ankle or foot is healing.
