CT Lung Screenings
CT Lung Cancer Screening: A Simple Step That Could Save Your Life
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American Lung Association (ALA), lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States—claiming more lives each year than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined. It’s second only to heart disease in overall mortality. But there is hope: early detection through low-dose CT screening can dramatically improve outcomes.
At Evanston Regional Hospital, we offer CT lung cancer screenings using our advanced 64-slice CT scanner. The scan is quick, painless, and non-invasive—and it could be life-saving. By identifying lung cancer in its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective, we can help patients take action before symptoms even appear.
Who Should Consider a Lung Screening?
We follow the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines to determine eligibility for screening. If you fall into one of the following high-risk categories, a screening may be right for you:
High-Risk Category One (Physician referral required)
- Age 55 to 74
- History of smoking:
- 1 pack/day for 30 years, or
- 2 packs/day for 15 year
- Quit smoking less than 15 years ago
High-Risk Category Two (Physician referral required)
- Age 50 to 54
- History of smoking:
- 1 pack/day for 20 years or more
- Plus one additional risk factor, such as:
- Chronic lung disease (COPD or pulmonary fibrosis)
- Family history of lung cancer
- Personal history of cancer
- Exposure to radon or occupational hazards (e.g., asbestos, diesel fumes, coal smoke)
Important: Candidates must be free of symptoms like chronic cough, chest pain, or unexplained weight loss to qualify for a screening.
If you believe you may qualify, we encourage you to talk with your physician or call our scheduling team to learn more. Taking this step could make all the difference.
