Meet the ER Physicians Providing Care

Steven Flynn, MD, Emergency Medicine
ER Medical Director

Steven Flynn, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and ER Medical Director at Evanston Regional Hospital. His interest in medicine began in junior high and deepened during his undergraduate studies at the University of Wyoming, where he earned his EMT license and worked as an ER technician. These early experiences shaped his path toward a career in emergency medicine.

Nathan Kartchner, MD
Emergency Medicine

Nathan Kartchner, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician with a strong commitment to compassionate care in critical situations. His path to medicine began as a nurse in a local emergency department, where the fast-paced environment inspired him to pursue medical school.

Rowan H. Kelner, MD
Emergency Medicine

Rowan H. Kelner, MD, is an emergency medicine physician with a strong dedication to patient care. His journey into medicine began at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked as a bone marrow transplant researcher. While conducting patient rounds with his mentor, he realized his calling extended beyond research to patient care.

David Shewell, MD
Emergency Medicine

David Shewell, MD, is an experienced emergency medicine physician with more than 30 years of experience caring for patients in critical situations. His interest in medicine began in high school, when he first decided to pursue a career as a physician. After earning his medical degree from the University of Cape Town in South Africa, Dr. Shewell immigrated to the United States in his mid-20s to continue his medical training.

Oliver Brady, MD
Emergency Medicine

Dr. Oliver Brady is a board-certified emergency medicine physician whose interest in healthcare began while working as an EMT in college. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the University of Utah after earning his medical degree from the University of Texas School of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience, cum laude, from Trinity University.

Known for his calm, clear communication and patient-focused approach, Dr. Brady provides emergency care for patients of all ages. He is proud to serve the Evanston community and values building trusted relationships with the patients and families he cares for.

 

Scott Berndt, MD
Emergency Medicine

Dr. Scott Berndt is a board-certified emergency medicine physician dedicated to delivering quality, compassionate care. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the University of Utah, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Berndt began his healthcare career as a nurse’s aide supporting hospice and cancer patients—an experience that shaped his empathetic, patient-focused approach. He is passionate about serving rural communities and values the strong, trusting relationships he builds with patients and their families.
