Nausea and Vomiting—Adult

Nausea is the sensation of an upset stomach or feeling like you might vomit. Vomiting is the forceful emptying of stomach contents through the mouth. It can lead to weakness and dehydration if fluids are not replaced.

Signs of Dehydration

  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth or cracked lips
  • Dark or reduced urine output
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

At-Home Care

  • Drink clear fluids slowly: water, ice chips, diluted juice, or electrolyte drinks.
  • Eat small amounts of bland foods: bananas, rice, toast, crackers, lean meats.
  • Avoid sugary drinks, caffeine, alcohol, spicy or greasy foods.
  • Take medications as directed by your doctor.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity.
  • Wash hands frequently to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Take slow, deep breaths if you feel nauseated.

Call a Doctor If You Have:

  • Worsening or new symptoms
  • Fever
  • Ongoing vomiting or inability to drink fluids
  • Muscle cramps or rash
  • Pain with urination
